The story begins in pre-civil war Virginia. Cyrus Black purchased a massive estate consisting of fifty bedrooms. Twenty-five of which were on the haunted and bloody west wing. Cyrus was a humble man who ran away from the monarchy and in search of a smaller life as a farmer in America. He married his beautiful but troubled wife, Heather, and moved into the famed manor. Unaware, Heather was a practicing witch. It angered her that the women didn’t bow down to her great beauty.
She lamented the aging process and found a seldom-used spell that would make her forever young. However, she would have to kill her loving husband and remove a body part or relic and hide it within the manor to be used along with five additional relics from future generations in a final ritual that would give her everlasting beauty and immortality. She cursed the mansion to only allow those named Heather Black to live in the house and each of five Heather Blacks fought the will to gruesomely kill their husbands and aid her quest. The spirits of the dead husbands offered them clues to fight the spirit of the original Heather Black.

Mystery, betrayal, murder, and passionate love were things Sofia Lazar only experienced as a movie producer. All of that changed after her grandmother’s sudden death when she comes face to face with an unwanted revelation contained in a tattered box. The meager contents of the box take her back to her childhood and the fantastic bedtime stories that Abuela, her grandmother, used to tell her of a heroic warrior girl named Franzisca. Now, two decades later, fragments of Franzisca’s stories creep back into Sofia’s life, tying Franzisca and her grandmother to an unknown past. With the memories of her childhood bedtime stories to guide her, Sofia sets out to piece together her grandmother's mysterious history, leading her to discover the truth behind her life.
Set against the backdrop of World War II Romania, the immigration of Nazi criminals into South America, the later years of the Military Regime in Argentina during the 1980s, and present-day California, Franzisca’s Box is a story of war that ultimately affects three generations of women who will never find peace until they call for a ceasefire in their own wars and surrender to forgiveness and love.

The Marine Corps immortalized by Hollywood hardly resembles the dysfunctional organization I joined in 1967, just as the Vietnam War was heating up. Incompetence, arrogance, sadism—all was rampant from the top down in an indifferent hierarchy that rewarded obedience over competence and sycophancy over truth-telling.
Like so many other Marines, I joined the corps because I had few choices available to me. As the youngest of eleven children, all of us living in poverty in rural Illinois, and as someone who had lived his whole life intimate with deprivation and hardship, I had few paths available to me.
I was surrounded by characters—outsized individuals with larger-than-life personalities, colorful ticks, and perplexing complexes.
There was the lance corporal from Pittsburg who liked to call himself Pitt. Rail thin; with a neck like a turkey’s to support his oversized head, he owned a crooked set of teeth that had yellowed from tobacco smoke. He had a quirky habit of sprinkling his cigarette ashes into whatever he was drinking at the time and then chugging it down, all in order to attain a more perfect high. Pitt, as I learned during my first night in Vietnam, was all about getting high, even while manning a checkpoint as an MP.
So it was that I endured four years of indifferent and sometimes sadistic leadership, the absurdities inherent in any impersonal hierarchy that values group-think and obedience over individuality and integrity.

Clarence Flannery was luckier than most men his age to discover his life’s ambition, particularly in the unpredictable years just following the Civil War. Born with an unmatched skill to play pool, he left his home in Kansas when he turned twenty-six and traveled throughout the Southwestern United States to make his mark as a legendary pool hustler, with every intention of amassing a fortune in the process.
Clarence needed help for both support and protection, and recruited James Skinner as his partner, along with nine other highly-skilled pool players to assist him in his quest.
Wanting to be included in the same sentence as Attila the Hun and Alexander the Great, Clarence changed his name to Hustle Henry, Skinner became the Cue-Ball Kid, and the eleven men would go down in history as The Hole-in-the-Table-Bunch, known far and wide for hustling wannabe pool sharks out of their life savings.
All goes to plan and life has a rosy and profitable outlook, but Henry and his men want more than what pool halls and saloons offer, so they decide to challenge the more affluent clientele on a riverboat.
Initially, the venture proves profitable, but the millionaire tycoon and owner of the fleet of riverboats, takes exception, and intends to bring down the Bunch and thrust Henry and The Kid into a life of destitution.
Taking along the Kid’s girlfriend, Penelope Henderson, the Kid and Henry flee to South America – where there will be a final showdown…
Hustle Henry and the Cue-Ball Kid is a fiction work of Western humor with an interesting and amusing cast of characters.
