Author Bio

Marie Lavender lives in the Midwest with her family and three cats.  She has been writing for over twenty years.  She has more works in progress than she can count on two hands.

At the tender age of nine, she began writing stories.  Her imagination fueled a lot of her early child’s play.  Even growing up, she entered writing contests and received a certificate for achieving the second round in one.  She majored in Creative Writing in college because that was all she ever wanted – to be a writer.  While there, she published two works in a university publication, and was a copy editor on the staff of an online student journal.  After graduating from college, she sought out her dream to publish a book.

Since then, Marie has published sixteen books.  Marie Lavender’s real love is writing romances, but she has also written mysteries, literary fiction and dabbled a little in paranormal stories.  Most of her works have a romantic element involved in them.  Upon Your Return is her first historical romance novel.  For links directly to all of Marie Lavender's books, please visit her website at http://marielavender.webs.com/

Mademoiselle, you have a guest…”
She struggled to sit up. “What do you mean, Rosalie?” Her tear-numbed eyes adjusted, and she saw him in the doorway. It seemed he would not take no for an answer.
“Shall I inquire to Pierre why he was not escorted to the library, why we were not informed of his presence? At this hour? Really it is not proper, mistress.”
“No, leave us,” she ordered her nursemaid. The woman left the room, frowning. Fara pulled her dressing sacque closer to her bosom and drew a hand across her eyes to stem the flow of tears. She took a deep breath, aware that her heart was hammering itself to death.
“I am sorry to have caught you at a time like this. I know your uncle's death has been hard for you.”
Recovering from her emotional turmoil, she took a deep breath. “Oui.” She frowned. “Capitaine Hill, it is unlike you to enter a lady's boudoir uninvited.”
“But can you really know, chère, what I am capable of?”
“Perhaps not. Yet there are rumors of your bedside manner…”
“Perhaps they are only rumors then,” he said softly as he sat on a nearby chaise.
Oui.” Fara shook her head. “Why are you here, Grant?”
“That does not matter. What will you do now without an escort, Mademoiselle?”
Oui, her uncle was dead and she had no one to look after her. But, why should he care about that? “Are you to fill the position, Monsieur?” she countered with a grin.
“Perhaps with your permission. Is it so funny?”
“Only that you feel you must concern yourself with my affairs.”
“Have I not done so since that first night in the harbor?”
Oui,” she replied. “But you are still in my boudoir--”
“Would you have me leave then--”
“Without permission…” she finished.
“Ah,” he exclaimed softly. “Then, Mademoiselle, may I enter your boudoir?”
She considered it, but with a smile playing on her lips, she answered, “No, Monsieur. You may not.”
He stood quickly and approached her, lifting a hand to gently touch her cheek. “You are a tease, Mademoiselle. You like playing with men, I think.” She frowned as he turned to leave. “Adieu, Fara. I shall see you on Tuesday.”
“What do you mean?”
He glanced back. “Tuesday. The reading of the will.”
“How do you know about that?”
“I have my ways.” He made his exit, whistling a sailor's tune through the dark hallways outside her bedroom. She heard the front door close.
She groaned. Why did he feel obligated to attend the reading of the will? That was her business. His interference in her life was certainly not helping matters these days. It being Thursday, however, she only had the weekend to prepare for what might happen. She couldn't begin to imagine what the will would say; mostly she feared what was on that piece of paper would change her whole life. Losing her uncle had been enough of a shock; losing everything would be devastating.

When I died, I expected to go to heaven.

Okay. Maybe hell. It’s not like I was perfect or anything. But I was sort of hoping for

heaven.

Instead, I went to Alabama.

Yeah. I know. It’s weird.

I died in Dallas, my hometown. I was killed, actually. Murdered. I’ll spare you the gruesome

details. I don’t like to remember them myself. Some jerk with a knife--and probably a Bad-Mommy

complex. Believe me, if I knew where he was, I’d go haunt his ass.

At any rate, by the time death came, I was ready for it--ready to stop hurting, ready to let go.

I didn’t even fight it.

And then I woke up dead in Alabama. Talk about pissed off.

You know, even reincarnation would have been fine with me--I could have started over,

clean slate and all that. Human, cow, bug. Whatever. But no. I ended up haunting someplace I’d

never even been.

That’s not the way it’s supposed to work, right? Ghosts are supposed to be the tortured

spirits of those who cannot let go of their earthly existence. If they could be convinced to follow

the light, they’d leave behind said earthly existence and quit scaring the bejesus out of the poor folks

who run across them. That’s what all those “ghost hunter” shows on television tell us.

Let me tell you something. The living don’t know jack about the dead.

Not this dead chick, anyway.

Amidst an epidemic ravaging the world, all Megan Fletcher's hopes for the future lie in getting to Las

Vegas where newscasts reported scientists were gathering to search for a cure for the modern plague.

After rescuing her from a rooftop surrounded by Zombies, Sam Woods appoints himself her escort.

While he knows she is determined to get to Vegas no matter the cost, he doesn't know her secret. And

with his hatred of all things Zombie, she doesn’t dare tell him the truth. The more he kisses her, the

harder it is for Megan to hide her growing feelings…and the bite-shaped scar.

But Vegas is not the haven it was promised to be, and when Megan’s immunity to the disease is

discovered, she realizes her future and her heart belong to Sam, if he will trust her. An idealistic school

teacher and ex-corporate mogul manage to find love despite a looming worldwide catastrophe. Can

their love survive while everything around them is dying? Will they learn that when facing the end of the

world, Only Love Survives?

A storm that spelled danger flashed across Sam’s face. He advanced on Megan so fast, she backed up

against the side of the Suburban. Planting a hand firmly on each side of her, he pinned her with his arms

“What I want? Are you so hard headed you can’t tell what I want?” He covered her mouth with his lips

and crushed her clever comeback with an assault on her senses.

Megan pushed him, but he didn’t budge. Instead, he continued to kiss her until her heart raced and

cheeks flushed with need. All resistance melted and she succumbed to the warmth of his embrace. Her

arms wound around his neck of their own accord pulling him closer while her tongue sought his in a

passionate dance, completely ignoring what her heart wanted.

When he finally broke away leaving Megan breathless and wanting so much more, Sam put his forehead

to hers and watched her mouth like a drunk watches amber liquid poured into a glass. “You,” he rasped.

“I’ve wanted you since I found you hanging from that damn roof, and all our little encounter in the river

did was add fuel to the fire.”

Welcome guest blogger: KC Sprayberry

Erin Sellers, an eighteen-year-old high school senior, hates teen drinking. She and her three friends – Bill, her guy, Shari and Jake - decide to use Twitter to stop a group, the Kewl Krew, from using their high school as the local bar. But the members of this group are just as determined to stop anyone from messing up their fun. Despite veiled threats to her safety, Erin continues her crusade.
To make matters worse for her, the stress of school and extra curricular work mounts and suddenly, shockingly, booze-fuelled tragedy strikes. Erin is now under greater pressure as she spends all hours to produce a mural and other work to commemorate the death of a teen friend. Bill, Jake and Shari support her in all this...
But more tragedy lurks nearby… until it’s time to softly say goodbye.

Underage Drinking and Young Adults
Many people have asked me what experience I have that makes me someone to write a novel about underage drinking. Very good question, and I have to admit that I'm no saint in that department. Most adults will admit they too had experiments with that during a youth that, for my generation, was as turbulent as what current teens face.
The late sixties to the early seventies saw a lot of social change in this country, a lot of uncertainty of what the world would turn out like. To say your parents or grandparents, or even great-grandparents don't understand about this issue isn't totally true. We actually do, even if we chuckle when saying, "Sure, I had a drink or two as a teen, but not all that much."
The internet, with its twenty-four hour, seven day a week instant access to information, however, didn't exist during our time. All we knew was there might or might not have been a group of teens that hid in one area of town to consume bottles of Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill wine, or some other currently popular alcoholic beverage, usually grabbed from a parent's stash. A lot of us snuck sips of a booze-laden soft drink, all the while expecting the strong arm of the law to discover us.
That's why it's so hard to say now – "Don't do this. It's wrong. You can ruin your life forever."
I can see those eye rolls from teens. Ruin your life – is she kidding? Nope, she's not kidding. The consequences of being caught at a drinking party if you're underage are far more severe than ever. No longer do the police contact your parents to come and get you. Your next ride is in the back of one of those patrol cars – straight to jail. You get a picture that you'll regret for years. Your fingerprints are attached to a record that will haunt you as you apply for colleges or jobs. Your future career might be affected so badly that you will have to give up your dreams.
Those are the external consequences; the ones that will frustrate you beyond reason. As your parents, we can empathize with your situation. You've seen your parents starting over as careers they depended on until retirement are disappearing, and they must begin anew, often in a field where they are a clueless as a recent college graduate. It's no fun to lose something you always wanted to do, so imagine that happening all because you went to a party and had a few beers.
"But it's just a few beers," you say. "You're not twenty-one, it's not legal," I counter.
Therein lies the problem. Booze is forbidden fruit, and every teen in creation at some point reaches for the unattainable. Just remember, this forbidden fruit has far worse consequences than the fabled apple that Eve gave to Adam. Think before you join with the crowd. Make your own crowd, prove you are ready to wait until you're old enough to drink alcohol sensibly.

Bio: KC Sprayberry started writing young, first as a diarist, and later through an interest in English and creative writing. Her first experience with publication came when she placed third in The Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge contest while in the Air Force, but her dedication to writing came after she had her youngest child, now in his senior year of high school.
Her family lives in Northwest Georgia where she spends her days creating stories about life in the south, and far beyond. More than a dozen of her short stories have appeared in several magazines. Five anthologies feature other short stories. She has four books that are Amazon best sellers: Softly Say Goodbye, Who Am I?, Mama's Advice, and Canoples Investigations Tackles Space Pirates. Her other available novels are: Take Chances, The Ghost Catcher, Family Curse … Times Two, Secret From The Flames, and Canoples Investigations Versus Spacers Rule.
