Thoughts On Bad Reviews

What makes people leave negative reviews? Was the book they read that terrible that they have to take the time to go in and leave a horrible review?

One step further: What makes them so bitter that they will leave a horrible review for a book that is free LOL.

Then we have my favorites. The ones where they seem to forget that what they are reading is fiction LOL. Meaning --- Not Real

I've had bad reviews left because they didn't like the bad guy in the story. Or they didn't like the way my character handled something bad in her life. The reviewer has said that they have been though that situation and they handled it differently so my book got a bad review because my character didn't handle herself the way the reader would have.

It's funny sometimes to read the negative ones.

I got one recently that was bad because my characters doctor took longer than what the readers real life doctor took with her in the same situation.

Sometimes I think readers get so involved in the story that they forget that it's fiction and the characters are not real.

What is your funniest negative review? or The one that made you the madest when you read it?

  1. I had one for my book His Perfect Submissive -- an erotic romance which complained that the book was too much like a romance novel. Well...yeah???

  2. That's too funny Laurie. I had one one time for my young adult book that said they didn't like it because it read like it was for a young person LOL.

  3. It began as a bad review in my mind. I thought I had posted the best story and it was ready for viewing. At the time I was just learning the phrase: "The best writing is rewriting." According to E. B. White.
This I hadn't done, until after the destructive review of my piece that left me lying there in a puddle. I didn't know what hit me. It felt horrible at the time. His critique totally demolished my work and sent me weeping back to the drawing board.

I composed myself and slowly went over his words against mine and found my piece extremely wanting, just like he said. He didn't destroy my work as much as he salvaged it from a certain death. I will never forget the KINDNESS he paid me that day. Just learning to listen to voices outside our head and not thinking we have all the answers, grew me up in my writing over night. Cheers, Don

  4. That is true Don, It is sooo hard to hear somebody tell you things about your work. We all think we have written the next greatest novel until it hits the editor's hands LOL Then we get that rude awakening. LOL

  5. I think my worst one was for a novella I wrote. The woman's comment was "I feel stupid for finishing this stupid book. I think a 12 year old wrote it."

Don't you love the maturity of her comment? :)

  6. OMG, I have had reviews that said they thought a child wrote it. What is with people LOL. I guess it makes them feel better to rip somebody else a part.

  7. I recently reviewed "Heavenly Pleasure" by Mark Covington, and then went to Amazon to post my five-star opinion. To my surprise, Amazon rejected the review. I still don't know why, but I did try again today by swapping out some words that could be considered offensive by the Amish. Several other reviews were posted. I read them. Most agreed with me, except one. The words were good, but the reviewer rated the book with one star. I don't get that. Why say in the text the book was good, but then give it a one-star rating? Reviewers amaze me, even though I am one.

  8. I agree. Sometimes the review will be really good but they leave such a low rating that it pulls your rating down. I don't get it either. :)

  9. I loved the bad review i got about Black Dog and Rebel Rose griping about how the romance "moved too fast"...for an erotica novel. WTF?????

  11. I have luckily never gotten a bad review. I had a reviewer from Night Owl say she had to stop reading Heavenly Pleasure because it offended her Christian values. That was pretty funny. I had one person who tracked me down and walked up to me and asked "Are you Mark Covington, the guy that wrote "Bullfish". I said, yes. He said "best damned book I ever read." I said thank you. He said " and you know you are going to hell". Best compliment I ever received.

  13. Mine came during my first blog hop tour. Page Turner's Blog was set to do a review, only she didn't like "The Chosen." Fortunately, she posted it AFTER the tour, and we took that post off of the tour.

As for the review itself, it only got 1 candle :( The reviewer also says that the synopsis has more description than the rest of the book. Ouch! To the reviewer's credit, she did say she hates to review books she doesn't like....but she still wrote it. Anyhow, I look at it as a learning opportunity. Fix what she says she didn't like in the next books.

  14. The way I see it is that we can't please them all. Everyone isn't going to love our books :) But it does kind of bring you down for a minute when you read some of the hateful things they say. But I don't let it bother me for too long. I just kind of laugh it off. :)
